Gertrude E. Zagrodnik

November 28, 1919 - May 24, 2022

Gertrude (Siemionko) Zagrodnik, 102, of Northampton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital. She was born in Easthampton on November 29, 1919, to the late Michael and Katherine (Jankowski) Siemionko. She was a graduate of Smith Academy High School, and later went on and worked for several years at the Northampton State Hospital as an Occupational Therapist. When her only child Charlene was born, she left work to raise and care for her for 18 years before Charlene ventured off to college. After that, Gertrude retuned to work at the State Hospital as a medical secretary before her retirement. Gertrude was a devout Catholic and was a communicant of the former St. John Cantius Church, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. She was a member of the St. John Cantius and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Woman’s Club, where she was charter member, Rosary Sodality, and the Polish Heritage committee. Gertrude was extremely creative, making everything out of nothing, from drapes, to matching bedspreads, knitting pattern sweaters, and even making clothes for her daughter. She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Charlene Zagrodnik of Northampton, and her partner Joseph Bannish of Westfield, several nieces, and nephews, especially her two special nephews: Richard Zagrodnik and his wife Trish and Roger Keith Siemionko and his wife Susan. Charlene would like to thank her mother’s primary care physician, Dr. Christine Baker, her cardiologist, Stephen DiPillo, his PA Nancy Logan, and the hospitalists, especially Julia Godfrey. She is also grateful for the compassion and kindness from the Doctors and nursing staff at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband Charles who passed away in 1983, and her brothers, Roger, and Merle “Monty” Siemionko. Calling hours will be Friday May 27th from 4-7 PM at DROZDAL FUNERAL HOME, 120 Damon Rd., Northampton. Funeral services will be Saturday May 28th from 9:30 AM from the Drozdal Funeral Home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 11AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Church, 99 King St., Northampton, followed by the committal in Calvary Cemetery in Hatfield. Masks are necessary to attend the calling hours and service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to a charity of one ‘s choice.
