Maxwell "Max" MacGregor Laing III

Maxwell M. “Max” Laing III, 84, of Southbridge, MA, passed away unexpectedly at his home. He was born in Northampton, MA on May 23, 1941, to the late Maxwell and Jane (Andrew) Laing Jr. He was educated in Northampton and was a graduate of Northampton High School. He proudly served in the US Navy aboard the USS Charles H. Roan DD-853. Upon being honorably discharged from the Navy, he settled and worked for several years as an Armored Car messenger for various companies before his retirement. Max enjoyed camping, visiting navy vessels, and spending time with his many friends at the Eagles Club, including being part of the yearly bike run for Karen’s Cause. He was a member of the Eagle Riders Group – Fraternal Order of Eagles in Southbridge Aux # 334, and the former Fraternal Order of Eagles of Northampton, MA. He was also a member of Improved Order of Red Men Nipmuck 131of Southbridge, MA and Sago 70, he was also past State President of Massachusetts State Aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 1978. He is survived by his sons, Keith M. Laing of Greenfield, MA, John M. Laing and his wife Jill of N. Hatfield, MA, his faithful companion, Milo, a niece, his good friends Tom Moriarty and Tim Caplette of Southbridge, and neighbors. Max’s family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Tom Moriarty and Tim Caplette for their many years of devoted friendship and care. Their kindness went far beyond helping with shopping—they regularly visited Max, provided companionship through challenging times, and made sure he was never alone, offering support and comfort that truly enriched his life. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Catherine (Higgins) Laing, his sister Jean Better, and his beloved dog Coco. Burial with Military Honors will take place on Thursday September 25, 2025, at 1:15 PM at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, MA; all are welcome to attend.
