Eunice H. Hathaway

Eunice H. Hathaway, 95, of Leeds, passed away at Linda Manor Extended Care Facility on Friday, February 10, 2023, with her family nearby. Eunice was born on August 17, 1927, in Westhampton, MA to the late John C. and Marion C. (Howard) Hathaway. Eunice spent most of her life on North Road in Westhampton where she grew up and raised her family. At age 16, after graduation from Northampton High School, Eunice became a Nurse Cadet and a member of the U.S. WWII Cadet Nursing Corps. As a teen she was also a proud member of the Ground Observer Corps. She continued her nursing career at Cooley Dickinson Hospital for 46 years and retired as Head Nurse of Surgery. In 1947, Eunice married Edward Cernak and they had four children: Stephen, James, Wayne, and Joan. Eunice was a loving and devoted mother to all her children, always putting their needs above her own. In her youth Eunice was a talented accordion player and travelled with the Pizzitola Plectro Accordion Symphony Orchestra. Eunice was also an accomplished and very talented seamstress, knitter, weaver, and quilter. Everyone in the family loved and appreciated the beautiful gifts that she created for Christmas and birthdays. She had completed quilts for almost the entire family before her passing. Eunice is survived by her sons, Stephen (Holly) Cernak of Francesville, IN, and Wayne (Judy) Cernak of Westhampton, and daughter Joan Cechura of North Judson, IN, five grandchildren, Kelly (Todd) Yancy, James (Angie) Cernak, Heather Montgomery, Stephanie (Dwight) Wilson and Sam (Brittany) Denno, 12 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Eunice was predeceased by her ex-husband Edward Cernak, son James Cernak, her brother and sister-in-law Frank and Olga Hathaway, son-in-law Jerry Cechura and grandson Brian Montgomery. The family would like to thank the staff at Linda Manor Assisted Living and Extended Care for all their help and support during the last year and a half. Also heartfelt thanks to all the friends and family members who have been so helpful and kind.
